Vietnamese Migrants in Russia - Lan Anh Hoang - eBook (9789048544639)
Drawing on ethnographic research conducted at Moscow's wholesale markets from 2013 to 2016 , this book provides original insights into how uncertainty shapes social practice, identity and belonging in the context of irregular migration from Vietnam to Russia. The uncertainties examined here are not just social, economic, and political, but also psychological and moral. The study speaks to various debates in migration and mobility studies - particularly those focused on brokerage networks, the political economy of sexuality, and social belonging - deepening our knowledge of how the core social values and cultural logics that underpin Vietnamese personhood are challenged and reconstituted by the ethos of the market economy. This book sheds important light on processes of mobility and social change in post-socialist societies that continue to grapple with yawning chasms between old and new ways of life, the local and the global, policy and practice, and obsolete governance techniques and …

Cross-border Mobility - Wendy Mee - eBook (9789048544936)
Cross-border Mobility - Wendy Mee - eBook (9789048544936)
Cross-border Mobility: Women, Work and Malay Identity in Indonesia offers a fresh perspective on the association between mobility and the ethnocultural category 'Malay'. In so doing, it raises new research questions that are relevant to the study of Indonesian women's socioeconomic mobility more generally. Based on fieldwork in Sambas, a region of Indonesia bordering Malaysia, this study documents the ethnocultural consequences of the highly mobile working lives of Sambas Malay women. Emphasising the significance of territorial borders in women's working lives, this study highlights how women's border location not only facilitates cross-border pathways of international labour migration and trade, but also generates feelings of peripherality that inform women's imaginative construction of other, nonterritorial borders that need to be crossed. Shaped by social class, gender, and the economic and cultural possibilities of political decentralization, the study identifies three borderscopes…

Migrant Penalties in Educational Achievement - Camilla Borgna - eBook (9789048530991)
Migrant Penalties in Educational Achievement - Camilla Borgna - eBook (9789048530991)
The integration of second-generation immigrants is a major challenge for European societies. Although born in the host societies, students of immigrant origin often have shorter and less successful educational careers than their native counterparts. Combining statistical and configurational methods, this book investigates whether and why, by the end of compulsory schooling, second-generation immigrants experience a disadvantage in reading, mathematics and science literacy. Migrant achievement penalties exist in all the 17 Western European countries analysed, but they are particularly large in countries where social inequalities in education are milder. This apparent paradox suggests that educational systems traditionally seen as egalitarian might not provide the best learning opportunities to students of immigrant origin. Even in comprehensive systems penalties can be large, if second-generation immigrants are segregated in low-quality schools; conversely, an early inclusion into the s…

Cross-border Marriages and Mobility - Avital Binah-Pollak - eBook (9789048538270)
Cross-border Marriages and Mobility - Avital Binah-Pollak - eBook (9789048538270)
*Cross-border Marriages and Mobility: Female Chinese Migrants and Hong Kong Men* focuses on cross-border marriages between mainland Chinese women and Hong Kong men, a phenomenon which is of critical importance to the transformation of Hong Kong. By examining the women's motivations for migration and lived experiences in relation to the discursive, political, economic, and social circumstances of mainland China and Hong Kong, Avital Binah-Pollak demonstrates how these marital practices are causing the expanding and blurring of borders, so that there is a much wider strip of border in which the dichotomies of the rural/urban, periphery/center, and hybrid/national identities become more complex and negotiable. While this is particularly interesting and valid in the case of the border between mainland China and Hong Kong because of the particular nature of the relationship between these two societies, it may also apply to borders between many other societies worldwide.

The global city debate reconsidered - Jeroen van der Waal - eBook (9789048525409)
The global city debate reconsidered - Jeroen van der Waal - eBook (9789048525409)
It is hard to overestimate the scholarly impact of Saskia Sassen's theorising on the 'global city', which revolves around the impact of economic globalisation on the social, economic, and political reality of cities in advanced economies. Yet, more than two decades of research dedicated to a 'global city debate' have left its main issues unresolved. In The Global City Debate Reconsidered, Jeroen van der Waal argues that this is because scholars have hitherto merely used theorising on the global city for interpreting urban change, while neglecting to systematically assess the empirical validity of this theoretical framework. In order to enable rigorous empirical scrutiny, Van der Waal unravels the global city debate into various distinct theoretical propositions, and relates these to competing theoretical notions of Richard Florida, Edward Glaeser, Chris Hamnett, and others. The resulting fresh hypotheses are tested by using data on one of the most urbanised and globalised developed eco…

She integrates written sources, geoarchaeological data, and zooarchaeological data to examine how fishing propelled political change in the North Atlantic. The evolution of survival fishing to internal fish markets to overseas fish trade mirrors wider social changes in the Vikings' world.

This volume provides original, nuanced insights into social meanings of money and wealth in moral economies of Asia. Through case studies from South and Southeast Asia, the collection sheds important light on how the new mobilities and wealth created by neoliberal globalization transform people's ways of life, notions of personhood, and their meaning making of the world. It highlights the moral dilemmas and anxieties emerging from the profound socio-economic transformations that are taking place across the region and deepens our understanding of local cultures as well as the inner contradictions of global capital in Asian contexts. With rich ethnographic insights and a diverse range of empirical contexts, chapters in this volume reveal multifaceted complexities and contradictions in the relationship between money and moralities. Money, they affirm, is not an impersonal, objective economic instrument with homogenizing powers but a culturally constructed and socially mediated currency in…
