The Cultural Life of James Bond - eBook (9789048532117)
The release of No Time To Die in 2020 heralds the arrival of the twenty-fifth installment in the James Bond film series. Since the release of Dr. No in 1962, the cinematic James Bond has expedited the transformation of Ian Fleming's literary creation into an icon of western popular culture that has captivated audiences across the globe by transcending barriers of ideology, nation, empire, gender, race, ethnicity, and generation. The Cultural Life of James Bond: Specters of 007 untangles the seemingly perpetual allure of the Bond phenomenon by looking at the non-canonical texts and contexts that encompass the cultural life of James Bond. Chronicling the evolution of the British secret agent over half a century of political, social, and cultural permutations, the fifteen chapters examine the Bond-brand beyond the film series and across media platforms while understanding these ancillary texts and contexts as sites of negotiation with the Eon franchise.

Does the Law of Succession Reflect Cultural Differences? - Reinhard Zimmermann - eBook (9789462748859)
Does the Law of Succession Reflect Cultural Differences? - Reinhard Zimmermann - eBook (9789462748859)
This is the published version of the first Maastricht Private Law Lecture which was delivered by Reinhard Zimmermann on 27 January 2017. According to a widely held view, the law of succession is shaped by the cultural values of the society within which it prevails. Related to this is the perception that the law of succession is marked by great stability. It is thus resistant both to change and to legal harmonization. Comparative research, too, has traditionally been regarded as impractical and unrewarding. In his lecture Zimmermann challenges this view. He points to transsystemic constants as well as transsystemic tendencies of development, to outdated peculiarities and thinking patterns as well as to the benefits to be gained by critical reflection, and he analyses historical examples of the phenomenon of legal charge and the reception of rules and ideas. The focus is, throughout, on two central problem areas within the province of the law of succession: testamentary formalities and t…

List cultures - Liam Cole Young - eBook (9789048530670)
List cultures - Liam Cole Young - eBook (9789048530670)
Inspired by the ubiquity of rankings, bullet points, and registries in contemporary 'list culture' and by Jack Goody's famous question 'What's in a list?' (1977), this book explores the list as a cultural and communicative form. It traces the list through a variety of contexts in an anarchaeological wandering (Zielinski) that reveals aspects of its role and function in human thought and action. I ask: how can this seemingly innocuous form be studied? What does its analysis tell us about historical and contemporary media environments and logistical networks? What can studying this unconventional object bring to Media Studies? The book contributes to contemporary debates around New Materialism and the post- or non-human turn. It is one of the first books from English-speaking Media Studies to offer a serious engagement with German theories of cultural techniques. In connecting these to Anglo-American approaches that address similar issues, the book provides an alternative engagement with…

The Female Baroque in Early Modern English Literary Culture - Gary Waller - eBook (9789048551118)
The Female Baroque in Early Modern English Literary Culture - Gary Waller - eBook (9789048551118)
The Female Baroque is a contribution to the revival since the 1980s of early modern women's writings and cultural production in English. Its originality is twofold: it links women's writing in English with the wider context of Baroque culture, and it introduces the issue of gender into discussion of the Baroque. The title comes from Julia Kristeva's study of Teresa of Avila, that 'the secrets of Baroque civilization are female'. The book is built on a schema of recurring Baroque characteristics - narrativity, hyperbole, melancholia, kitsch, and plateauing, pointing less to surface manifestations and more to underlying ideological tensions. The crucial concept of the Female Baroque is developed in detail. Attention is then given particularly to Gertrude More, Mary Ward, Aemilia Lanyer, The Ferrar/Collet women, Mary Wroth, the Cavendish sisters, Hester Pulter, Anne Hutchinson, Margaret Cavendish and Aphra Behn, the latter two whose lives and writings point to the developing cultural tran…

Neorealist Film Culture, 1945-1954 - Francesco Pitassio - eBook (9789048526253)
Unique, truthful, brutal... Neorealism is often associated with adjectives stressing its peculiarities in representing the real, its lack of antecedents, and its legacy in terms of film style. While this is useful when confronting auteurs such as De Sica, Rossellini or Visconti, it becomes problematic when examining a widespread cultural practice that realistic modes deeply affected. This cultural production included filmmaking, literature, visual culture and photography, as well as media discourses. It was internally contradictory but fruitful inasmuch as its legacy influenced national culture for many decades to come. The volume spotlights post-war Italian film culture by locating a series of crossroads, i.e. topics barely examined when discussing neorealism: nation, memory and trauma, visual culture, stardom, and performance. The aim is to deconstruct neorealism as a monument and to open up its cultural history.

For the nations on its borders, the rapid rise of China represents an opportunity-but it also brings worry, especially in areas that have long been disputed territories of contact and exchange. This book gathers contributors from a range of disciplines to look at how people in those areas are actively engaging in making relationships across the border, and how those interactions are shaping life in the region-and in the process helping to reconfigure the cultural and political landscape of post-Cold War Asia.
