In 2014 an integral edition of Couperus’ fairy tales Psyche and Fidessa was published with all of Reith’s illustrations, 75 in total. The illustrations for Couperus fit in with the Art Nouveau style from around the turn of the century. Reith’s original drawings are kept in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. Reith (1894-1974) was a Dutch graphic designer, illustrator, cartoonist, art teacher, author, book cover designer and art collector. Reith illustrated numerous books, especially children’s books. Psyche is based on Apuleius' story of Cupid and Psyche. It tells us about the king's daughter of that name and her two sisters, Emeralda and Astra. After the death of their father, Emeralda, the eldest sister, ascends to the throne of the Kingdom of the Past. Fearing her unscrupulous sibling, Psyche flees the castle on the bac…

The shroud of Turin - Danielle van Dijk - eBook (9789491748318)
The shroud of Turin - Danielle van Dijk - eBook (9789491748318)
Finally in March 2014 prominent scientists managed to conclusively prove that the Shroud of Turin is not a fake and that the imprint on the Shroud has not been painted upon it. Likewise it has scientifically been proven that the carbon dating test from 1988 is entirely wrong. It is most remarkable that the imprint of Jesus’ body on the Shroud is a negative image. Only when photos are taken of the Shroud do the details of Jesus’ figure become clear. Surprisingly the imprint is three dimensional. Nobody can explain in whatever way the imprint has come about. No scientific theory whatsoever has been able to explain the phenomenon so far. Convincingly and carefully Danielle van Dijk gives a plausible explanation based on esotericism. The revelation of the secret can be found in the Body of Light of Jesus that is set free after His resurrection, which is a one-off and unique phenomenon. In this wonderful book, full of authentic texts and beautiful illustrations, the author investigates what…

Icon animorum or The mirror of minds - John Barclay - eBook (9789461661395)
Icon animorum or The mirror of minds - John Barclay - eBook (9789461661395)
Original Latin text with English translation on facing pages. In this essay from 1614 the Neo-Latin poet, translator, and commentator John Barclay describes the manners and mores of his European contemporaries. He derives the sources of an individual's peculiarities of behavior and temperament from the 'genius' - the individual character created by each person's upbringing, time of life, and profession. Barclay likewise describes each nation's genius, its national character, and provides some of the geographical and historical background from which he claims this genius arose. The essay is a valuable study, not only for the illustration it offers of a pre-Romantic view of Europe, but for a glimpse into the continuities that mark European civilization. The introduction describes the Classical and Renaissance background to Barclay's work, with a detailed biography of the author. The Latin text reproduces Barclay's first edition, with the necessary corrections. The English translation (16…

Psyche is based on Apuleius' story of Cupid and Psyche. It tells us about the king's daughter of that name and her two sisters, Emeralda and Astra. After the death of their father, Emeralda, the eldest sister, ascends to the throne of the Kingdom of the Past. Fearing her unscrupulous sibling, Psyche flees the castle on the back of the flying steed Chimera. She plunges into the unknown world outside the castle walls. On her magical journey she comes into contact with a Satyr, the Sphinx, weeps a river, marries Eros, traverses the underworld and turns from innocent beauty into untamed princess. Eventually, she dies by the hand of Emeralda. This wonderfully dramatic story speaks of innocence, purity, decay, hope and despair. The underlying morality of succumbing to passion and the threat this can pose still stands the test of time today.
