Homosexuality, Transidentity, and Islam - Ludovic-Mohamed Zahed - eBook (9789048544080)
-- With a foreword from Jan Jaap de Ruiter. Translation and Afterword by Adi S. Bharat. -- In *Homosexuality, Transidentity, and Islam: A Study of Scripture Confronting the Politics of Gender and Sexuality*, Ludovic-Mohamed Zahed systematically analyses the entirety of Islamic scriptural sources that relate to the question of gender and sexuality in relation to their historical contexts. Through an approach that is certainly more politically engaged than that of most Islamic thinkers of our time, he clarifies key theological concepts that may seem esoteric to the uninitiated. In doing so, he makes a compelling case for the compatibility of sexual and gender diversity within Islam. Zahed also examines the historical and contemporary socio-political impacts of inclusive and exclusive (or, quite simply, homophobic, transphobic, and misogynistic) interpretations of scripture. This important study dynamically examines the connections between scripture, interpretation, and the politics of ge…

Games and Game Playing in European Art and Literature, 16th-17th Centuries - eBook (9789048544844)
Games and Game Playing in European Art and Literature, 16th-17th Centuries - eBook (9789048544844)
This collection of essays examines the vogue for games and game playing as expressed in art, architecture, and literature in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europe. Moving beyond previous scholarship on game theory, game monographs, and period and regional studies on games, this volume analyzes a range of artistic and literary works produced in England, Scotland, Italy, France, and Germany, which used the game topos to illuminate special themes. In essays dealing with chess, playing cards, dice, gambling, and board and children's games, scholars show how games not only functioned as recreational pastimes, but were also used for demonstrations of wit and skill, courtship rituals, didactic and moralistic instruction, commercial enterprises, and displays of status. Offering new iconographical and literary interpretations, these studies reveal how game play became a metaphor for broader cultural issues related to gender, age, and class differences, social order, politics and religion, a…

Fictions of Containment in the Spanish Female Picaresque - Emily Kuffner - eBook (9789048538171)
Fictions of Containment in the Spanish Female Picaresque - Emily Kuffner - eBook (9789048538171)
This study examines the interdependence of gender, sexuality and space in the early modern period, which saw the inception of architecture as a discipline and gave rise to the first custodial institutions for women, among them convents for reformed prostitutes. Meanwhile, conduct manuals established prescriptive mandates for female use of space, concentrating especially on the liminal spaces of the home. This work traces literary prostitution in the Spanish Mediterranean through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, from the rise of courtesan culture in several key areas through the shift from tolerance of prostitution toward repression. Kuffner's analysis pairs canonical and noncanonical works of fiction with didactic writing, architectural treatises, and legal mandates, tying the literary practice of prostitution to increasing control over female sexuality during the Counter Reformation. By tracing erotic negotiations in the female picaresque novel from its origins through later m…

Logic and Islam - Prof. Dr. Magd Abdel Wahab - Paperback (9789463388580)
Logic and Islam - Prof. Dr. Magd Abdel Wahab - Paperback (9789463388580)
In part II of this book series Logic and Islam, we answer the main question: can science prove that the Holy Quran is from Almighty God and has a divine origin? To answer this question, we gathered 77 scientific miracles from the Holy Quran. These miracles are scientific issues that have been revealed 1400 years ago and proven to be correct through our modern science and technology. We present each scientific issue from revelation and historical points of view, by comparing the year of its revelation with that of its discovery by modern science. The 77 scientific issues are grouped in six different categories: 1) astronomical issues, 2) earth science issues, 3) medical and biological issues, 4) animal and plant issues, 5) physics issues and 6) historical issues. By using the theory of probability, we demonstrate that the possibility to predict all 77 issues correctly by chance is quasi-zero. In other words, if a human being tried to predict the 77 issues correctly, they would need an i…

Linking High-Level Accused to Sexual and Gender-Based Crimes in International Criminal Law - Sylvester Sammie - eBook (9789051897937)
Linking High-Level Accused to Sexual and Gender-Based Crimes in International Criminal Law - Sylvester Sammie - eBook (9789051897937)
Linking High-level Accused to Sexual and Gender-Based Crimes in International Criminal Law focuses on the theoretical and practical perspectives taken by the ICTY, ICTR, and ICC. It seeks to answer the question of how high-level officials can and should be investigated and prosecuted for their role in the commission of sexual and gender-based crimes. The author examines the forms, types, and amount of evidence used to prove the role of these high-level accused in the commission of crimes by rank-and-file soldiers. As the accused are usually not present on the crime scene, the international criminal courts and tribunals must rely on individual criminal liability theories enshrined in Article 7 ICTY Statute, Article 6 ICTR Statute, and Articles 25 & 28 Rome Statute to connect them to the atrocities committed on the ground. 100 individual cases from the ICTY, ICTR, and ICC are examined and reveal that in most cases there was sufficient evidence to prove that sexual and gender-based crimes…

Sexuality, Subjectivity, and LGBTQ Militancy in the United States - Guillaume Marche - eBook (9789048528646)
Sexuality, Subjectivity, and LGBTQ Militancy in the United States - Guillaume Marche - eBook (9789048528646)
As LGBTQ movements in Western Europe and North America are becoming increasingly successful at awarding LGBTQ people rights, especially institutional recognition for same-sex couples and their families, what becomes of the deeper social transformation that these movements initially aimed to achieve? The United States is in many ways a paradigmatic model for LGBTQ movements in other countries. This book focuses on the transformations of the United States' LGBTQ movement since the 1980s, highlighting the relationship between its institutionalization and the disappearance of sexuality from its most visible claims, so that its growing visibility and legitimation since the 1990s have not led to an increase in militancy. The book examines the issue from the bottom up, identifying the links between the varying importance of sexuality as a movement theme and actors' mobilization, and enhances the import of subjectivity in militancy. It draws attention to cultural, sometimes infrapolitical, for…

Vietnamese Migrants in Russia - Lan Anh Hoang - eBook (9789048544639)
Vietnamese Migrants in Russia - Lan Anh Hoang - eBook (9789048544639)
Drawing on ethnographic research conducted at Moscow's wholesale markets from 2013 to 2016 , this book provides original insights into how uncertainty shapes social practice, identity and belonging in the context of irregular migration from Vietnam to Russia. The uncertainties examined here are not just social, economic, and political, but also psychological and moral. The study speaks to various debates in migration and mobility studies - particularly those focused on brokerage networks, the political economy of sexuality, and social belonging - deepening our knowledge of how the core social values and cultural logics that underpin Vietnamese personhood are challenged and reconstituted by the ethos of the market economy. This book sheds important light on processes of mobility and social change in post-socialist societies that continue to grapple with yawning chasms between old and new ways of life, the local and the global, policy and practice, and obsolete governance techniques and …

Cross-border Mobility - Wendy Mee - eBook (9789048544936)
Cross-border Mobility - Wendy Mee - eBook (9789048544936)
Cross-border Mobility: Women, Work and Malay Identity in Indonesia offers a fresh perspective on the association between mobility and the ethnocultural category 'Malay'. In so doing, it raises new research questions that are relevant to the study of Indonesian women's socioeconomic mobility more generally. Based on fieldwork in Sambas, a region of Indonesia bordering Malaysia, this study documents the ethnocultural consequences of the highly mobile working lives of Sambas Malay women. Emphasising the significance of territorial borders in women's working lives, this study highlights how women's border location not only facilitates cross-border pathways of international labour migration and trade, but also generates feelings of peripherality that inform women's imaginative construction of other, nonterritorial borders that need to be crossed. Shaped by social class, gender, and the economic and cultural possibilities of political decentralization, the study identifies three borderscopes…

Islam & Europe - eBook (9789461660039)
Within the framework of the Forum A. & A Leysen, several experts from in and outside the Muslim world contributed to this book. In Islam and Europe: Crises Are Challenges they discuss how dialogues between Islam and the West, with a focus on Europe, can be achieved. The various authors (legal scholars, political theorists, social scientists, and psychologists) explore in these collected essays such interrelated questions as: How much diversity is permissible within a liberal pluralistic democratic society? How strong are the implications of citizenship? What are equitable accommodations of contested practices? They argue for an adequate understanding of how Western Muslim communities in Europe experience their minority position and what needs to be done to improve their participation in European society. The second part of this volume is a collection of papers written around the work of Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im, who also makes his own contribution to the book. The Catholic University o…

Gender, Space and Experience at the Renaissance Court - Maria F. Maurer - eBook (9789048536689)
Gender, Space and Experience at the Renaissance Court - Maria F. Maurer - eBook (9789048536689)
Gender, Space, and Experience at the Renaissance Court investigates the dynamic relationships between gender and architectural space in Renaissance Italy. It examines the ceremonial use and artistic reception of the Palazzo Te from the arrival of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1530 to the Sack of Mantua in 1630. This book further proposes that we conceptualise the built environment as a performative space, a space formed by the gendered relationships and actors of its time, asserting that the Palazzo Te was constituted by the gendered behaviors of sixteenth-century courtiers, but it was not simply a passive receptor of gender performance. Through its multivalent form and ceremonial function, Maria F. Maurer argues that the palace was an active participant in the construction and perception of femininity and masculinity in the early modern court.
