Flagellant Confraternities and Italian Art, 1260-1610 - Andrew Chen - eBook (9789048535453)
This book examines the art and ritual of flagellant confraternities in Italy from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Meeting regularly to beat themselves with whips, members of these confraternities concentrated on the suffering of Christ in the most extreme and committed way, and the images around them provided visual prompts of the Passion and the model suffering body. This study presents new findings related to a variety of artworks including altarpieces, banners, wall paintings, illuminated manuscripts, and paintings for the condemned, many from outside the Florence-Rome-Venice triangle.

Saints, Infirmity, and Community in the Late Middle Ages - Jenni Kuuliala - eBook (9789048533343)
Saints, Infirmity, and Community in the Late Middle Ages - Jenni Kuuliala - eBook (9789048533343)
Bodily suffering and patient, Christlike attitudes towards that suffering were among the key characteristics of sainthood throughout the medieval period. Drawing on new work in medieval dis/ability studies, this book analyses the meanings given to putative saints' bodily infirmities in late medieval canonization hearings. How was an individual saint's bodily ailment investigated in the inquests, and how did the witnesses (re)construct the saintly candidates' ailments? What meanings were given to infirmity when providing proofs for holiness? This study depicts holy infirmity as an aspect of sanctity that is largely defined within the community, in continual dialogue with devotees, people suffering from doubt, the holy person, and the cultural patterns ascribed to saintly life. Furthermore, it analyses how the meanings given to saints' infirmities influenced and reflected society's attitudes towards bodily ailments in general.

Ornament and Monstrosity in Early Modern Art - eBook (9789048535873)
Ornament and Monstrosity in Early Modern Art - eBook (9789048535873)
Sixteenth-century art features a remarkable fascination with ornament, both as decorative device and compositional strategy, across artistic media and genres. Interestingly, the inventive, elegant manifestations of ornament in the art of the period often include layers of disquieting paradoxes, creating tensions - monstrosities even - that manifest themselves in a variety of ways. In some cases dichotomies (between order and chaos, artificiality and nature, rational logic and imaginative creativity, etc.) may emerge. Elsewhere, a sense of agitation undermines structures of statuesque control or erupts into wild, unruly displays of constant genesis. The monstrosity of ornament is brought into play through strategies of hybridity and metamorphosis, or by the handling of scale, proportion, and space in ambiguous and discomforting ways that break with the laws of physical reality. An interest in strange exaggeration and curious artifice allows for such colossal ornamental attitude to thriv…

Written by a range of academics from different backgrounds (from architecture and urbanism, anthropology, social science, psychology, gender studies, history, and philosophy) their trans- and multidisciplinary approaches shed valuable light on what are sometimes quite old problems, leading to fresh perspectives and news ways of dealing with them. One thing that unites all of these papers is their people-centred approach, because, after all, a city is its people.

Illusions - Ingeborg Bosch - eBook (9789080704947)
Illusions - Ingeborg Bosch - eBook (9789080704947)
'Nobody really cares about me' 'When I can, I avoid confrontations' 'I do everything, just to be liked' 'In the end, it's never good enough' 'Occasionally I want to smash anything and everything' Strong emotions and negative thoughts can rule our lives if we don't know where they originate from, how we can handle them or how we can liberate ourselves from them. This can result in mere survival, avoidance, anxiety and a life full of conflict. This is unnecessary, since many of these feelings and thoughts are based on illusions that we developed as children to suppress painful feelings. Whilst these subconscious survival mechanisms are very useful for us as children, they can have a destructive impact on our adult life. In this sequel to Rediscovering the true Self, Ingeborg Bosch touchingly describes how these illusions can make life more difficult and more painful than it needs to be. Using clear examples, Bosch explains how we can overcome this illusory suffering. She gives us the key…

Games and Game Playing in European Art and Literature, 16th-17th Centuries - eBook (9789048544844)
Games and Game Playing in European Art and Literature, 16th-17th Centuries - eBook (9789048544844)
This collection of essays examines the vogue for games and game playing as expressed in art, architecture, and literature in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europe. Moving beyond previous scholarship on game theory, game monographs, and period and regional studies on games, this volume analyzes a range of artistic and literary works produced in England, Scotland, Italy, France, and Germany, which used the game topos to illuminate special themes. In essays dealing with chess, playing cards, dice, gambling, and board and children's games, scholars show how games not only functioned as recreational pastimes, but were also used for demonstrations of wit and skill, courtship rituals, didactic and moralistic instruction, commercial enterprises, and displays of status. Offering new iconographical and literary interpretations, these studies reveal how game play became a metaphor for broader cultural issues related to gender, age, and class differences, social order, politics and religion, a…

Handheld XRF for art and archaeology - eBook (9789461660695)
Handheld XRF for art and archaeology - eBook (9789461660695)
Applications, possibilities, and limitations of handheld XRF in art conservation and archaeology. Over the last decade the technique of X-ray fluorescence has evolved, from dependence on laboratory-based standalone units to field use of portable and lightweight handheld devices. These portable instruments have given researchers in art conservation and archaeology the opportunity to study a broad range of materials with greater accessibility and flexibility than ever before. In addition, the low relative cost of handheld XRF has led many museums, academic institutions, and cultural centres to invest in the devices for routine materials analysis purposes. Although these instruments often greatly simplify data collection, proper selection of analysis conditions and interpretation of the data still require an understanding of the principles of x-ray spectroscopy. These instruments are often marketed and used as 'point and shoot' solutions; however, their inexpert use can easily generate de…
