Decriminalization of Sex Work - Joep Rottier - Paperback (9789462368842)
In many countries worldwide, sex workers have no other choice than to carry out their profession in illegal environments. Repressive policies force them to work in difficult or dangerous underground settings. They need to struggle against incomprehension, moral disapproval, prejudices, and increasing public stigmatization. Contrary to prevailing tendency in Europe and America to criminalize clients of sex workers, New Zealand decriminalized the entire commercial voluntary sex industry in 2003 by enacting the Prostitution Reform Act (PRA) – as the only state in the world, so far. The implementation of this integrative sex industry policy marks a turning point in the lives and working conditions of New Zealand sex workers. Sex work became recognized as legitimate service work. Nowadays, the sex service sector in this country operates under the same legal rights as any other service sector. In Decriminalization of Sex Work: The New Zealand Model, Joep Rottier contextualizes the historical…

The quiet revolution - eBook (9789088503887)
The quiet revolution - eBook (9789088503887)
The all-encompassing welfare state that often suffocates citizens is having its final drink in the last-chance saloon. The introduction of the open market as a possible alternative has not been successful either. People are suppressed by the expanding 'system world', damaging their 'life world'. For that reason the welfare state does not need to be reformed, but replaced. The 'participation state' is the natural successor. In that society - which could also be characterised as 'do-it-yourselves' - people themselves prefer to address and resolve issues affecting their own living conditions on a family and community level. This transition in the western world from 'state power' to people power' implies that governments and non-profit organisations must assume a different position. Both parties must exercise restraint so that, at last, the civil society can show its power. Self-management and self-governance become more and more important. This fundamental shift is occurring in a time of …

Frontline command - Jelle Groenendaal - eBook (9789462743458)
Frontline command - Jelle Groenendaal - eBook (9789462743458)
Some frontline organizations presume that frontline command (defined as the direct supervision of frontline workers by frontline commanders) is required for frontline work to be effective. However, little scholarly effort has been devoted to investigate frontline command. This thesis therefore investigates the effectiveness of frontline command in the police organization responsible for major criminal investigation and the response organization of the fire service. Several research methods are used to get a better understanding of the degree to which frontline command can be studied. Contrary to the expectations of frontline organizations and many frontline commanders, the findings suggest that in current practice frontline commanders contribute to the effectiveness of frontline work only to a limited extent. However, in theory there is still a need for frontline command. This thesis suggests that frontline command can be appropriately studied and therefore calls for more empirical rese…

A new dawn for the second sex - Karen Vintges - eBook (9789048522279)
A new dawn for the second sex - Karen Vintges - eBook (9789048522279)
To what extent is Simone de Beauvoir's study The Second Sex still relevant? From her work it emerges that patriarchy is a many-headed monster. Over the past decades, various heads of this monster have been slayed: important breakthroughs have been achieved by and for women in law, politics, and economics. Today, however, we witness movements in the opposite direction, such as a masculinist political revival in different parts of the world, the spread of the neoliberal myth of the Super Woman, the rise of transnational networks of trafficking in women and children, and a new international 'Jihadism'. This suggests that patriarchy is indeed a Hydra: a multi-headed monster that grows several new heads every time one head is cut off. Since different - often hybrid - heads of patriarchy dominate in different settings, feminism requires a variety of strategies. Women's movements all over the world today are critically creating new models of self and society in their own contexts. Drawing on …

Productomschrijving

In Decriminalization of Sex Work: The New Zealand Model, Joep Rottier contextualizes the historical-cultural and sociopolitical backgrounds of this integrative sex industry policy. This explorative and descriptive research provides insights in the unique role of the New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective (NZPC) – as a social movement organization – in the policy making process. Whereas successful self-organization of sex workers is recognized to be a challenge in most countries, NZPC in New Zealand offers an inspiring look at what may become possible if such self-organization does work out. By means of 119 interviews with involved key actors in the New Zealand sex industry, this book gives a unique view on de facto experiences with this policy from different perspectives. The qualitative research shows that the New Zealand Model practices what other policies mainly preach: the voices of the people most involved – the sex workers – are heard and taken seriously.
