'Ontkomen' is het vluchtverhaal van het joodse echtpaar Albert en Ella Andriesse-van den Bergh uit 1940-1941, bezorgd door historicus dr. Bart Wallet. Deze authentieke documenten - decennialang alleen in familiekring bekend - geven een uniek inkijkje in het leven van de Nederlands-joodse elite in de eerste jaren van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. A forgotten hero George Maduro was a household name in the Netherlands of the 1930s. He was the handsome, charismatic son of a well-to-do Jewish family from Curaçao and had garnered national fame as a university student when he tried to kidnap the mascot of the Royal Dutch Navy. The invasion of the Netherlands by Nazi Germany put an abrupt end to his carefree existence. On the first day of the invasion he led a courageous charge to recapture a strategic villa, which helped delay the German advance. News of his brave feats travelled far and wide; even the Gestapo knew who he was. George joined the Resistance, was arrested twice and miraculously released after a long imprisonment in the infamous ‘Oranjehotel’ prison. In broader terms, Lepanto and Beyond also sheds light on the construction of religious alterity in the early modern Mediterranean. It presents cross-disciplinary case studies that explore the figure of the Muslim captive in historical documentation, artistic depictions, and literature. With a focus on the Republic of Genoa, the authors also aim to balance the historical scale and restore the important role of the Genoese in the general scholarly discussion of Lepanto and its images.

Rethinking the relationship between EU law and Belgian national law. The relationship between EU law and national constitutional law, including constitutional law in federalism matters, has been subject to an ongoing scholarly debate. This monograph contributes to this debate in two ways. The author argues for an approach to constitutional law that goes beyond the classic - coined dogmatic - understanding of constitutional case law regarding federalism as expounded in Belgian academia. Building on that basis, he sets out to rethink the framework within which the connection between EU law and national constitutional law can be understood. The analysis delves into the relationship (and sometimes tension) between 'rule-of-law' values (which may serve as checks upon instrumental forms of reasoning) and the toolbox deployed in constitutional court case law to accommodate several rather pragmatic needs.
